Skills That Bookkeeper Must Have

Bookkeepers need to have certain skills, such as communication and organization. Bookkeepers communicate with clients and other professionals about the financial records they must keep. They organize their office space so that necessary papers are readily available when they need them.

Bookkeeping is the recording of financial transactions, in either electronic or hard copy form. Financial transactions are when money changes hands between two entities. These transactions can include sales, purchases, loans, and any other exchange involving cash, property or services.

The goal of bookkeeping is to assemble all this information into reports that help managers make operating decisions. Bookkeepers need certain skills to do their jobs well. Without them, managers won’t get accurate or timely data needed to run their business efficiently. 

The general work of a bookkeeper includes:

▪ balancing books (processing vouchers and preparing/checking reconciliations).

▪ reporting (preparing financial statements)

▪ accounting procedures (managing asset control, maintaining security measures, filing business reports)

Bookkeepers must be detail-oriented. They also need to pay attention to costs and expenditures to make good decisions for the company’s future. Bookkeeping skills include math, clerical work, record keeping, problem-solving abilities, basic keyboarding skills (typing), advanced spreadsheet skills (especially using macros or VBA). 

Skills that bookkeeper must have:

1. Knowledge of basic accounting

Of course, one must have knowledge of the field he or she is in.

2. Computer literacy

Using various computer programs such as Microsoft Excel will help you do your job well. There is other software available online that can be used by bookkeepers like Time Matters, Intuit Pro Series or Simply Accounting which makes them more efficient in their jobs. 

3. Accuracy

Keeping records is one of the most important tasks that a bookkeeper does. They have to make sure that they have all their counts correct and that transactions are recorded correctly so there will be no discrepancies in the books. 

4. Mathematical skills

The first thing a bookkeeper has to do is record a transaction either by writing it down or using a software program which means being able to understand mathematical concepts, especially those related to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

5. Communication skills

A bookkeeper’s job requires organizing data, creating reports and presenting them orally to superiors who need accurate information about the status of their company’s financial health. The ability to communicate effectively can help you gain more respect from your managers as well as improve your professional development.

It’s a must-have skill that every bookkeeper should possess.

6. Analytical skills 

This is an essential part of a bookkeeping job because you not only have to rely on your numbers, you also need to analyze them as well as interpret the data for higher management.

This will help provide solutions and strategies to make better decisions about the company, especially those related to its operations, marketing plan and profits et cetera. 

7. Leadership 

The power of influence can help you become successful in your career especially if your managers truly appreciate your effort and dedication to work hard each day. Being able to lead others may get you promoted faster than other people doing the same type of work with fewer leadership skills 

8. Problem-solving

This is another skill that will test your ability to think on your feet and think of possible solutions for you to come out with a workable solution even if the odds are against you. This can help increase your value as an employee and can also help you retain the trust of your superiors.

A bookkeeper’s skills play a very important role in how he performs his tasks. It affects how well they do their job as well as his efficiency, accuracy and productivity. As was said earlier, learning new skills is an ongoing process which means learning these skills over time builds up expertise.
